Rimonabant or Acomplia is the latest anti-obesity and
anti-smoking medication presented by Sanofi-Aventis. The drug has
gained formal approval from the United States Food and Drugs
Administration authority as anti-obesity therapy. However, its use
as the anti-smoking medication still requires further studies for
gaining FDA approval and to be sold within the United States. The
drug is also believed to be very effective for giving up alcohol and
drugs addictions.
Like all other medicinal formulations, Rimonabant or Accomplia too
has reported several mild to serious side effects. The two year long
studies on the medication has showed side effects that include
depression, anxiety and irritability, however these side effects
were reported to be minor and short-spelled only. Nearly thirteen
percent of the contenders who participated in the clinical studies
took the recommended doses of Rimonabant or Acomplia discontinued
taking the drug and abandoned the study because of the side effects.
Some scientists have also showed deep concerns about the psychic
side effects of this drug and some others strongly believe that the
U.S. FDA would like to carefully study the continual use of the drug
for probable risk factors prior to granting the formal approval to
the drug. This process is supposed to take years anyway. The patient
suffering from the neurological disorders should avoid taking this
medication.
The RIO-North America trail was believed to be the first that
developed the two-year safety and efficacy data for Rimonabant or
Acomplia and related to its probable side effects has showed the
remarkable rate of withdrawal symptoms from the trial because of
depressive conditions.
